Kinetika Bloco has an amazing professional team that works with us to create our unique sound, dance and costume and make it all happen. They are inspirational people who help to progress the skills of our young people and mentor them to be the best. We often bring in new people but here are our regulars…

Mat Fox RIP
Musical Director

Mat was our Founder and Musical Director since 2000. He led us exceptionally until he sadly passed away in February 2014. Mat was a master of all things musical and it is his passion and talent that has developed the Bloco style and culture. We hope that in this next season we will continue to keep his memory alive through everything that we create. He is in our hearts and groove forever.

Ruben Fox
Junior Musical Director

Ruben follows in his fathers talented and charming footsteps composing, arranging for and leading the Bloco. He is in his final year at Trinity College of Music on the Jazz course and is already playing nationally and internationally with his own quartet and other bands including Kansas Smittys, Kalichakra and many others.

Claude Deppa
Brass Director

Claude came to London from Cape Town in 1975 and is one of the finest jazz trumpet players in the country. He is a huge inspiration to our horn section and can be heard regularly blasting it out from the backline! Claude also plays with Grand Union Orchestra and regularly gigs nationally and internationally.

Andy Grappy
Brass Director

Representing the lower brass we have Andy who is one of the UK’s finest Tuba players, he performs regularly with The London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Abdullah Ibrahim, Jazz Jamaica and many others. He is also Head of STAX Southwark Music Service.

Mark Kavuma
Junior Brass Director

Mark is fast becoming a key and inspirational young Trumpet player on the British jazz Scene and is one of our own! He leads his own Quartet and Quintet as well as playing with the likes of Jazz Jamaica, Nu Civilization Orchestra, and has featured with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln centre orchestra, Mulatu Astatke and in 2014 toured Internationally with Peter Brooke's Production of The Suit.

Theon Cross
Bloco Leader - Brass

Theon Cross, Tuba Player extraordinaire, joined bloco 2004. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is a member of the Mobo award winning Sons of Kemet. He has worked with a range of artist including Jon Batiste & stay Human, Pharoahe Monch, Robin Eubanks, Little simz and many more. He is also a bandleader in his own right and is a nominee for instrumentalist of the year at the 2016 jazz fm awards.

Sam Agard
Bateria Director

Sam ‘Blue’ Agard started drumming in 1987 and hasn’t stopped since! He has toured internationally with Corinne Bailey Rae, Paloma Faith and is currently working with Professor Green and Plan B. He has bought his soul, Funk and RnB grooves to the Bloco Bateria since 2005.

Andre Johnson
Bloco Leader - Bateria

Andre joined Bloco 3 years ago with a classical percussion training and a passion for playing Indian Tabla. Bloco helped develop his interest in Brazilian rhythms and he now helps teach, compose and arrange for Bloco. He is currently studying Music at SOAS University of London with an interest in Indonesian Gamelan and Korean Salmunori.

Leon Hazlewood

Leon heads up our dancers with an amazing amount of energy and charisma. He trained at the London Studio Centre and has performed professionally in theatre, TV and pop videos! He was one of the original jazz tap dancers in Riverdance! Leon is also Director at WAC-performing Arts and Media College

Leila McMillan

Leila first bought her special SoCal sunshine and energy to the Bloco in 2009. Having trained in commercial dance in California she moved to London in 2004 training at Laban and since then in many techniques including flying low, passing through, ballet, hip hop, jazz. She is a founding member of 50collective.

David Bennie
Bloco Leader - Dance

David joined us in 2012 and has been flipping his way through the dance section ever since! He is passionate about dancing, music, teaching and performing and despite the struggles he has had in his past he always wants to help others smile. David has helped us run dance workshops in schools and youth centres and helps to lead the dance section at Summer School each year.

Reeva Christie
Bloco Leader - Dance

Reeva can most often be found at the front of the dance section with a big beautiful smile. She has trained in Commercial, Contemporary, African and Jazz dance and was principal dancer with One Youth Dance, performing for the Queen! Reeva is about to finish her training at WAC Performing Arts and Media College.

Wade Austin
Steel Pan Director

Larger than Life Trinidad-born London-based Wade ''Big Trini'' Austin is our Steel Pan Director. He excels in a wide array of contexts playing pans in soca bands and jazz or African ensembles. He is passionate about teaching pans to children and young people and is determined to break down any stereotypes to the instrument. We love having him on our team.

Scarlett Stewart
Bloco Leader - Steel Pans

Scarlett is a currently studying at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. She has performed nationally and internationally for acts including Fleur East, Rachel Platten, Tony Momrelle & The Clash and is a member of the London Community Gospel Choir and The House Gospel Choir. She joined Bloco when the pan section first started and now helps lead it. She is passionate about youth development within music and loves teaching music.

Lesley-Ann Halls
Costume Designer

Lesley-Ann is a passionate artist, designer, project manager and Bloco Auntie joining our Board of Trustees in 2010. She worked for London 2012 Ceremonies to deliver the Olympic and Paralympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies and bought this experience to design our 2013 costumes. In a previous life she was an actress and carnival performer in Trinidad.

Iola Weir

Iola has been making us all look beautiful with her make up designs since 2002! She is from Venezuela and has just completed her second degree in Technical Effects for the Performing Arts at the London College of Fashion. She works as an Artist on the Summer School.

Carolyn Ebanks

Carolyn has worked with the Bloco since 2003 as an artist and general maternal figure!! Her skills span the spectrum from Digital Arts to Sliversmithing. She works as an Artist on the Summer School and can also be found regularly teaching at a PRU in South East London.

Tamzyn French
Bloco Manager

Tamzyn has managed the Bloco since 2004 helping to make it all happen. She manages all the recruitment, client liaison, gig details, funding, schedules, pastoral care and just general office management. She has a degree in Music but won’t be seen in the band any time soon!

Shayanna Dyer-Harris
Bloco Admin Assistant

Shayanna, a Bloco member since the beginning, now takes a leadership role. She works with Tamzyn leading on the structure of schools workshops, mentoring Bloco members, running drum workshops and generally being amazing. She is a ball of energy whether running a session with 70 school children or sitting in a network on music education.

Lawrence Becko
Funding and Development

Lawrence supports Bloco with fundraising and development. He joined the Board of Directors in 2012 and later became Vice Chair until 2015. He loves helping out behind the scenes developing our education work and fundraising for exciting new programmes like the Bloco Academy. He plays piano, guitar, saxophone and produces music which has been placed on TV shows round the world.
