The Colour of Sound February 2012

Over February half term we worked with 45 young people at Archbishop Sumner Primary school who gathered from the North Lambeth cluster of Primary and Secondary Schools for 4 days.  They chose to learn either Samba drumming, African drumming, Steel pan or Brass and together created a performance of 8 pieces of music which they shared with friends and family on Saturday 18th February.

The participants had a great time saying "I liked this course because I was with my friends and also I was playing music", "I didn’t have to stay at home and do nothing because I got to come here and learn something new", "I enjoyed the staff, the music, the different variety of instruments to play and when I get back to school I will be a whole lot better at playing the Cornet!"

The Tutors from Kinetika Bloco team were assisted by 5 young people from the Bloco Leadership Programme who helped to teach and mentor the participants and had a great time in the process.

“I am proud of my influence on the children. Whenever there was a problem, they came to me. I also took responsibility for a group I wasn't prepared for and it turned out great”

“The highlight for me was realizing these kids look up to me. One said "sir I want to play and feel music like you do" that comment was a lot, but I replied "I'm teaching you to become better than me so one day you can do this!"
